Position description

The EHR (Electronic Health Record) Support Assistant works closely with the providers and members of the care team in the practice to assist in optimizing the use of the EHR and supporting tools. The ESA is typically assigned to specific areas of the practice and provides performance support within practice areas. As a member of the RTD team, an ESA supports of an overall strategy to continuously optimize provider and practice efficiency through the use of the electronic environment tools, the EHR system, and associated workflows.

Duties include routinely rounding in departments; participation in provider on-boarding process, assisting providers with setting up electronic environment, regular attendance at practice meetings and other project meetings with a focus on communicating and supporting on-going/on-site performance support for providers and clinical staff. The ESA will also participate in projects associated with new or changing EHR functionality, as well as providing on-site support during implementation of new or updated EHR systems. The ESA will deliver classroom training, co-facilitate training, and assist in classroom training as needed as well as make recommendations on how the training needs may be met.

The ESA team will work closely with the practice, Informatics, HIMS, IT Support, and RTD Training and Development Analysts to continuously look for ways to improve user functionality and productivity of the EHR, by directly assisting staff, proactively identifying opportunities, escalating functionality concerns and helping to resolve EHR issues. In addition, the ESA may be expected to participate in EHR related process improvement projects, lean teams, usability testing and provide base education and answer "how to" questions related to EHR projects.


Associates degree or certificate in LPN, Medical Assistant, Administrative Clinical Assistant, Health Unit Coordinator, Medical Technology, Business, or related field OR minimum of two years’ experience using an EMR in a hospital or clinic setting. Credentialed to train in Epic or will complete Epic credentialing within 6 months in the ESA position.

Additional qualifications

Current experience with Mayo Clinic EHR applications (e.g., Epic applications, MICS LastWord, Synthesis, Outpatient Orders, MSS, and Clinical Notes Editor) and productivity applications (Dictation tools, Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, EHR mobile tools and other mobile applications, Microsoft Office Suite) required. Ability to demonstrate computer literacy in aforementioned applications. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot for relevant technology related issues. Communication/training skills in both individual and group settings. Able to work independently and within a team. Ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously. Problem solving and decision-making skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of healthcare professionals.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $19.99 per hour.
